Mental health is a concept that refers to the emotional and psychological welfare of the individual. Merriam-Webster defines mental health as a “state of emotional and psychological well-being in which an individual can use their cognitive and emotional capabilities, function in society and meet the demands of ordinary daily life.
According to WHO, there is no official definition of mental health, cultural differences, subjective assessments, and the competition of professional theories, make it difficult to define “mental health”. In general, most experts agree that mental health and mental illness are not opposites. In other words, the absence of a recognized mental disorder is not necessarily an indicator of mental health (probably due to ignorance of the wide variety of mental states to be defined, and the young age of medical science in general as we know it today, especially the science that attempts to define more accurately these complex disorders or health-psychiatric illness that is).
